From RationalWiki MediaWiki 1.35 test
Jump to navigation Jump to search
This is a wiki running MediaWiki 1.35 with RationalWiki's extension set installed. Please help to test it.

Shared tables are disabled, so you will have to create a separate account.

The whole wiki will be deleted once the main site is migrated to MediaWiki 1.35.

If you test something on this wiki and it works, please add a note below in the relevant section. If you test something and it fails, please either add a note below or file a bug in GitHub against the relevant component.

The top priorities for testing are the extensions that are used only on RationalWiki, all of which have had substantial changes for compatibility with 1.35 which are mostly untested.

RW's very special extensions[edit]

  • Submitting All under year and month returns an HTTP 500 error, unless the user exists.
    • Should be fixed. Appears to be fixed.
  • Submitting a specific real user (Christopher) gave a database error and "Unknown column 'rev_user_text' in 'where clause'"
    • Should be fixed. Appears to be fixed.
  • Submitting month 04 year 2021 and top 2 returned a 500 error; trying a second time returned Varnish 503
    • Should be fixed. Appears to be fixed.
  • Possibly its a feature I don't understand, but submitting all months all years top 10 returns accounts with names like rw>Nx, rw>ClickerClock, listed as having multiple edits. Clicking on these accounts indicates they have 0 edits.
    • rw>Nx is old:User:Nx, same for any others. The edits are to pages I imported from the actual Wiki (specifically gadgets), getting editcount to work with properly with imports would be nice but I doubt it’s a new issue and it’s not high priority. Christopher (talk) 14:30, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
  • Doesnt work properly with liquidthreads (displays the correct editcount, but the namespace entry is blank). See special:editcount/Christopher for an example. Not a new issue.

  • Testing this would require setting up an election, and changing the eligibility requirements or making people eligible through some other means as this server won’t exist for 3 months.
    • If this doesn’t work, it’d be good to know before an actual election. Christopher (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
    • Suggestion (as time has passed but edits are low): Change the configuration so that "Techs" are automatically "Eligible users". (I think that workaround could even be kept on the main wiki without causing any problem.) --ApooftGnegiol (talk) 01:23, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

  • __NSFW__
    • Does this even work on the current RW? According to this, this kitten picture should not render inline, if I understand correctly.
      • It doesn’t work cureently, there isn’t even an option to enable or disable NSFW images in preferences. That option does now exist, so it could be possible to get it working.
    • Doesn’t work with images from Wikimedia commons, can’t test it with local images as I can’t upload them (see #Core).
      • Still doesn’t work viewing a saved page for me, but works in preview. May work for some users (see User talk:Spud).
    • Works with commons images, was just a caching issue (as it usually is if there’s a preview/saved distinction). Bottom line: the extension works.
    • Works with local images
    • Not a bug, but as old:category:NSFW exists and is intended for images with this magic word, it’d be good if it was added automatically.

  • Adds the rel="nofollow" attribute to interwiki links
    • Works

  • <choose>
    • Works in preview.
  • {{#choose:}}
    • Seems to work, kept changing displayed text when repeatedly previewing, but I don't know how to clear the cache after finishing the edit. Tried it at User:Serenity/sig

  • <bible>
    • Previewing produced Varnish 503 error (tried Genesis 1:1).
    • Update: previewing currently produces an internal error, which I'm guessing is because it couldn't find the bible:
  • {{expand:...}} -- Preprocesses input as template call, to allow recursive substitution with {{subst:expand:Template}}
  • __NOTITLE__
  • {{titlestyle:...}} -- Allows styling the page title (.firstHeading)

  • Special:VandalBrake
    • Form display
      • Works fine
    • preventaccount
      • Shouldn’t be a feature, see below
    • autoblock
      • Site policy is to never vandal bin IPs, for the same reason we don’t permanently block them. This shouldn’t be a feature, and now would be the perfect time to remove it, along with the ability to bin IPs directly. Given that there were no issues when User:BobMad was vandal binned, it may be these settings that caused the site to go down. If changing the functionality of an extension based solely on my opinion is an issue I could raise it at the saloon, but I think it’s obvious what the response would be. Christopher (talk) 19:57, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
    • anononly
      • Shouldn’t be a feature, see above.
  • Special:VandalBin
    • Basic display
    • Search by name
    • Parole form display
    • Parole submit
  • Hooks
    • Editing as a vandal
      • Likely took the site down
        • The site started producing 503 errors the second I binned myself, I never got a chance to try to edit anything.
        • This should be fixed now.
    • Editing as a paroled user
    • Account creation as a vandal
    • Contributions tool links
    • Rename a user who is a vandal
    • Upload as a vandal (should be blocked)
    • Move as a vandal (should be blocked)

Pages such as MediaWiki:vandallogparole no longer default to anything if not created, but work fine once they are. Will need to be created on the main wiki before the upgrade for the bin to continue to function, unless this is addressed.

  • <vote>
    • Seems to be broken. The bar with three buttons displays, but clicking the buttons causes them to disappear, and the bar also disappears.
    • Working now. Possibly tracking net vote, rather than total votes, but need more voters to check. Here and on RW, it seems to track you across accounts: if you switch accounts and vote again, it replaces your old vote rather than add a new one to the total.
      • Tracking across accounts is intentional
    • Doesn’t appear to keep track of all the votes, just displays the most recent one. The polls on User talk:Christopher have had at least two votes cast, but only my vote displays.
      • Should be fixed now. The problem was that IP address detection in core was broken, so everyone was voting as -- Tim Starling (talk) 02:06, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
  • <votecp>
  • <vote nextpoll=...>
  • <capture>
  • <captureencode>
  • <bestof>
  • <multi>
    • Broken. Poll displays, but you can't vote.
    • Working now.
    • Same issue as <vote>, only tracks most recent vote.
  • <slider>
    • This feature has been sunset. It shouldn't throw errors, but it shouldn't be functional.
  • <sliders>
    • This feature has been sunset. It shouldn't throw errors, but it shouldn't be functional.
  • <checkbox>
    • This feature has been sunset. It shouldn't throw errors, but it shouldn't be functional.
  • <checkboxes>
    • This feature has been sunset. It shouldn't throw errors, but it shouldn't be functional.

Not strictly relevant to the upgrade, but an editor on RW has pointed out that this extension doesn’t work well if you’re colourblind. Worth changing the default or making an option?

If someone submits a patch which changes it, I can accept the patch. -- Tim Starling (talk) 08:36, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

  • {{#arg:...}}
    • Setup broken, removed from test wiki. Do we really need this?
  • {{#rand:...}}
    • Setup broken, removed from test wiki. Do we really need this?
  • {{#skin:...}}
    • Setup broken, removed from test wiki. Do we really need this?

Community maintained extensions[edit]

  • Dont think this sees much (if any) use on the wiki, DPL covers most cases. The basics work.

Christopher (talk) 20:57, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

DynamicPageList (third party), aka DPL2, can be replaced by DynamicPageList3 which other DPL-using wikis like Uncyclopedia and Illogicopedia use nowadays. DPL3 can be used like DPL2, assuming no new bugs ran into. DPL2 basically looks obsolete, growing buggier with new MW versions.

OK, but I need to do a security review. -- Tim Starling (talk) 10:29, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
Done, deployed. -- Tim Starling (talk) 00:55, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Any dpl output is immediately proceeded by a link to Template:Extension DPL. For example, {{#dpl:namespace=}} and

Both produce

  • The bug that prevents categories and files from being linked to correctly persists:

but the simple workaround is still effective

Category:Pages using DynamicPageList parser function
Category:Pages using DynamicPageList parser tag

  • It’s impossible to edit template:Extension DPL, attempting to do so always leads to a false edit conflict notice that claims another user has blanked the page. Deleting the page leads to it immediately being recreated (according to recent changes, it’s recreated by the site itself,, although no edits exist in the history).

  • Works. Cannot test it as a MediaHandler, since file uploading is broken but all other forms of calling it work. Sirius (talk) 22:47, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Wikimedia deployed extensions[edit]

Doesn’t work at all

It's disabled by configuration. An old config file explains "we only need this for abusefilter, we don't need the filtering". That's fixed now in AbuseFilter, so the extension can be uninstalled. Unless you want it, in which case I can enable it. -- Tim Starling (talk) 01:35, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Works. Sirius (talk) 22:36, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Searching currently returns an error if a page with the exact name does not exist.

  • simple citations work
  • named citations seem to work
  • grouped citations work
  • nested citations work as expected

Sirius here, checking if it works over a VPN. 22:38, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Works! ReCaptcha is used here. Sirius (talk) 22:38, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • User registrations and edit counts work as expected. Following needs testing. Don't test these with templates in your signature, they don't work if you have those:
  • Own talkpage notifications (leave a comment on someone else's talkpage with a user signature).
  • Ping template notifications (link to a user with link syntax, then do a user signature).
  • MediaWiki:Echo-blacklist test the blacklist (if a user is on this, they should never be generating Echo notifications even if the previous criteria are met).

  • Extension heavily tied to CirrusSearch, doesn't appear to be configurable or able to produce errors on it's own. Sirius (talk) 22:40, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Works, although many individual Gadgets are likely broken. Do we want to test each Gadget separately? Sirius (talk) 22:00, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
    • A lot of gadgets are broken anyway. It’s probably not essential to test them all, but we might as well. I don’t use many gadgets, but all of the ones I have enabled here worked fine as expected. Christopher (talk) 22:07, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Works but appears to be mostly unused on RW itself at the moment. Sirius (talk) 22:03, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • appears to work

  • Works

  • appear to work

  • Works with all three renderers (MathML, LaTeX and PNG). Test it here while changing the appearance in Special:Preferences. This fixes it compared to mainline rationalwiki, where it is broken with the MathML renderer iirc. Sirius (talk) 21:58, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Although uploading is broken (see Core), PDFHandler works by testing with wikimedia commons files. Sirius (talk) 21:55, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Seems to work fine

  • Replaced with SyntaxHighlight and works perfectly fine. Sirius (talk) 22:41, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

  • It's possible to play a video file. Transcode doesn't seem to happen. -- Tim Starling (talk) 05:44, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Doesn’t work on the normal server, I can’t test it here but it would be very strange if it did work. I believe it was intentionally disabled, although I can’t find anything confirming it. Anything it could do can be done with abuse filters.

  • seems to be working; did not test image functionality

  • Login as administrator
    • Works
  • Edit main page
    • Works
  • User rights
    • Administrators/sysops have several user rights they shouldn’t have, specifically the ability to edit site/other user json pages and anything related to abuse filters. Less important, but we don’t need the two new user groups (suppressor and interface admin).
      • Hideuser is currently suppressor only, when there’s no need for the user group at all. If it’s given to anyone, it should be limited to techs and mods to prevent abuse.
    • The purge right now only confers the ability to purge pages, not purge them without confirmation. Users should get the right to purge pages without confirmation and anyone should be able to purge pages with confirmation. Having this change would be very annoying given the site’s heavy usage of random generators.
      • Correction: anyone, even those without the purge right, can purge a page with confirmation. The purge right doesn’t appear to do anything.
        • This was changed upstream in 2016 per T135170. Use JavaScript or something. -- Tim Starling (talk) 05:47, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
  • Upload files
